A group of funeral directors in South Africa say they will sue a self-styled prophet who claims to have resurrected a dead man

A viral video of Pastor Alph Lukau shows him shouting “rise up” to a man lying down in a coffin who then jerks upright to cheers from worshippers. The funeral companies say they were manipulated into being involved.

The spectacle, seen outside Pastor Lukau’s church near Johannesburg, has been ridiculed and condemned by many.

Thaddeus Matthews, a controversial Memphis pastor better known as the “Cussing Pastor” for his profanity-laced messages which have attracted millions of viewers online, is defending his decision to host a sexually provocative twerking contest at his church, telling his critics “f*** you.”

“This message is for all you hypoChristians who live hypocritical and f***ed up lives when you have the nerve to judge someone else. I look at many of you who have criticized the young ladies who were dancing in my gymnasium in my church. I look on your pages, you got your a**, your titties out. You got all type of trash in your life but you want to be the one to judge – f*** you,” said Matthews, who leads the Naked Truth Liberation and Empowerment Ministries, in a video message posted on Instagram.

“You motherf***ers who are out here judging, there is nothing in the Bible about dancing but it is judging. Again, f*** you.”

Certain beliefs ought to disqualify a person for certain jobs. For example, a vegetarian probably shouldn't be the lead chef at a steakhouse. A pacifist wouldn't make a good general. And an atheist shouldn't be a pastor. At least, that's what you would think.

A liberal denomination in the true north is giving that last bizarre scenario a go. The leadership of the United Church of Canada has settled a years-long controversy by voting to allow Reverend Gretta Vosper, a self-proclaimed atheist, to keep her post as lead minister at West Hill United Church in Toronto.

In her sermons and in her book "With or Without God," Vosper has made it clear she doesn't see the Bible as the authoritative word of God. She views "God" as not a personal Being, but as a metaphor of love, compassion, and beauty. Each Sunday, members of West Hill United Church replace prayer with "community sharing time," and then sing hymns that have been rewritten to accommodate secular sensibilities.

I’ve always affirmed that there is a difference between what many Christians call doctrine and mere denominational manner/codes of conduct. For instance, while trying to explain aspects of their church traditions, it’s not unusual to hear some believing folks talk in terms of “our church doctrines”.

When you ask them what those ‘doctrines’ are, they tell you how their church doesn’t allow the use of jewelry; how they disallow wearing of trousers by women; how that men and women must sit separately in their churches…

Those who restrict believing women from wearing trousers do so based on their erroneous perception/interpretation of the biblical truths. Such instructions as “don’t ear trousers; don’t do make make-up; don’t wear jewelry, etc. are nothing but rules, regulations or codes of conduct set down by certain denominations based on their individual sentiments/opinions on the godly conducts of believers, especially in their gatherings. Such opinions are however null and void because they are not hinged strictly on what the bible says about them.

The manner of life/outlook of believers must align solely with God’s word. From my interactions with believing folks who disapprove of wearing of trousers by ladies, I’ve come to observe that when asked why they are against it, they hardly have a substantial scriptural reference(s). Most times, they result to subtle-coercion and clever manipulation of particular scriptures to make it want to mean what it originally doesn’t mean.

Folks against trousers for women indulge in hypocrisy by cherry-picking from the host of laws within the same chapter 22. The same body of law in Deuteronomy 22 that says “the woman shall not wear that which pertains to the man and vice-versa” says “don’t wear clothes made of mingled materials (wool and linen) together – verse 11. Also, “don’t sow different seeds on the same plot of land” – verse 9… Wouldn’t it be hypocritical if one takes a liking only to verse 5 and ignore the rest?

Why Can’t You Be a Christian Witch?

If you can be a Christian rapper who frequents strip clubs or a Christian model who poses in scanty lingerie, why can’t you take this one step farther? Why can’t you be a Christian witch?

In the words of “Christian witch” Rev. Valerie Love, “My job as a minister of the living God, as an ordained minister of spiritual consciousness is freedom, to set us free. … People are in religious bondage because religion told you what to think, what to do. I’m not here to tell you what to think. I’m here to support you in how to think.”

How liberating it is to be a Christian witch! What makes Love’s story even more bizarre is that she was born into a witch’s household — hence, “born a witch” — then was a Jehovah’s Witness from the ages of 4 to 30 before leaving the “cult.” So, she fashions herself a Bible-believer and has recently launched the Covenant of Christian Witches Mystery School with the ultimate goal being “self-realization.”

And it appears that Love is not the only “Christian witch.” That helps explain why, last November, Jennifer LeClaire published a “Prophetic Warning: ‘Christian’ Witches Rising Using the Name of Jesus.” Of course, this is absolutely crazy and totally unbiblical and completely heretical. This is calling light darkness and darkness light. And this is certainly a jump from being a Christian lingerie model or a strip-club frequenting Christian rapper. READ MORE:

Michael A. Walrond Jr., one of New York City's most influential pastors who leads the more than 10,000-member First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem, is coming under fire online for telling his congregants that the belief that Jesus is the only way to Heaven is "insanity."

"We are an ever evolving community of visionaries, dreamers, and doers who have been called by God to live the lives we were created to live; commanded by God to love beyond the limits of our prejudices and commissioned by God to serve," the statement read.

The key is you believe in God. And whatever your path is to God I celebrate that. Personally I celebrate that," he said to a smattering of applause. "Again, we have enough in this world that divides us we need to find those things that bring us together. And if God cannot bring us closer together then something is wrong, not with God but in how we think we know God and understand God."

Yi-Chen will publish the book himself. As for distribution, he says he's not worried. "The word of God has its own power," he says. "I just wrote down the revelation I received, and God will take care of the rest." If not this generation, then the next, he says. He's not worried.

Residents of the Lebanese city of Tripoli donned bright, curly wigs and dark body paint Sunday for Zambo, a mysterious festival on the eve of the start of the Orthodox Christian period of Lent. The origins of the annual celebration remain unclear, even to celebrants. It only seems to take place in a seaside suburb of Tripoli, a Muslim-majority city with an Orthodox minority.

But that has never dampened revellers, dozens of whom hopped and danced their way through Tripoli’s streets, glittery hats on their heads and sceptres in hand, a day before the beginning of the fast for eastern-rite Christians.

“Zambo, zambo, zambo!” they chanted. Muslims and Christians often take part in each other’s festivities here – but no one is quite sure where Zambo came from.

Apollo Quiboloy, Megachurch Pastor Who Claims to Be Appointed Son of God, Detained With Piles of Cash

Apollo Quiboloy, a controversial megachurch pastor from the Philippines who boasts some 6 million tithing followers in that country and worldwide, was detained by federal agents in Honolulu, Hawaii, last Thursday after some $350,000 in cash and parts to assemble military-style rifles were discovered on his private jet.

Quiboloy, who leads the Kingdom of Jesus Christ Church, was among six people on his Cessna Citation Sovereign when Customs and Border Enforcement agents boarded it just before departure and found the cash and gun parts, Hawaii News Now reported. The cash was all neatly folded $100 bills stuffed inside socks in a suitcase.

Quiboloy, who is a former member of the United Pentecostal Church, founded the Restorationism church in 1985 after he said he received a calling from God. According to Asia Times, God came to his mother in the form of a cloud after he was born, and declared, "That's my Son."

"When the Father called me, He isolated me in two mountains. He let me go through some spiritual experiences that I never had before. He said, 'I'll give to you the spirits of these ministries: the mosaic, solomonic and the prophetic ministries.' And in those visions, I (and many others) saw myself standing, as three, big, spirit-like men entered my body. The interpretation was of the three ministries – the mosaic, the solomonic, and the prophetic ministry – entrusted to me by the Father," he notes on the church's website. He calls himself the appointed son of God.

For the second year, pro-LGBTQ Christians across the country will “come out” on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) as part of #GlitterAshWednesday, announced today by the Rev. Marian Edmonds-Allen, executive director of Parity, lead organizer of the initiative.

“Last year Glitter Ash Wednesday had an effect far beyond what we had dreamed, with more than 200 churches and communities in 29 states, the United Kingdom and Canada taking part,” said the Rev. Edmonds-Allen. “We were amazed by the number of people who relished the opportunity to come out as LGBTQ and Christian, and by the scores of churches that wanted to share their love for those who far too often are told that God doesn’t love them because of who they are or who they love.”

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day season of self-reflection and preparation for Easter. The imposition of ashes on the forehead, a traditional practice that “marks” believers with the sign of the cross, takes place in Christian churches and communities worldwide, as well as in parks, commuter rail stations and other public spaces. In addition to offering the traditional ashes, participants in #GlitterAshWednesday offer ashes mixed with purple glitter, combining a symbol of repentance with a message of solidarity.

The Rev. Elizabeth M. Edman, the Episcopal priest and author who conceived Glitter+Ash 2017, said, “Ashes are a bold, public statement that death and suffering are real. Curtis, has sparked a vigorous debate online after his $230,000 Bentley Bentayga, which costs nearly twice as much as the median home in the church's Larimer neighborhood, was photographed outside the church.

The photograph of the pastor's Bentayga, which Bentley boasts is the fastest SUV in the world with a top speed of 187 mph, was posted to Facebook Monday by Jarrell Taylor who criticized the pastor's opulent display.

The shooting of two California deputies responding to a disturbance at the Rastafarian marijuana farm has drawn attention to religious use of the drug, sparking debate over whether churches should be protected from drug prosecutions.

Heidi Lepp launched her Sugarleaf Rastafarian Church in 2014 while Charles was serving eight years in federal prison after openly growing more than 20,000 pot plants in Lake County for what he considered religious purposes. She said she’s advised nearly 200 farms affiliated with her church not to adhere to state licensing rules.

“As a member of the church you aren’t bound by a lot of the rules other people are,” Charles Lepp said. “You’re not supposed to grow in Yuba County where this incident happened without a county-issued permit, (but) as a church you don’t need a permit.”

At this point, the Lepps have no plans to come into the legal fold. They insist that religious freedom laws apply to them because marijuana is the sacrament of their religion. Heidi Lepp shares a set of documents with every group that affiliates with her Sugarleaf Rastafarian Church, advising them not to consent to property searches or police questioning. She instructs them all to call her before dealing with law enforcement.

A New Jersey pastor and his wife who allowed their now 10-year-old son to start identifying as a girl at age 2, say they made the decision to let him live as he liked because he gravitated to "all things girly" as a child and was so unhappy with his life as a boy he tried to kill himself.

With his son Ben, now living as a girl named Rebekah, Pastor Christopher Bruesehoff of Holy Counselor Lutheran Church in Vernon, New Jersey, told Barcroft TV that he is worried about his transgender child's life as Rebekah gets older in the world.

"I've always worried about the reaction with Rebekah, both in the community and the church and the world. I'm very worried about how the world is going to treat her, because I see a lot of ugliness in the world on a regular basis," he said.

Still, the spirit world could not be left as it was, in a whirlpool of chaos. God had to make the final decision. He proclaimed, “The transition of the lineage, transition of the rights of ownership and transition of the realm of heart that Rev. Moon speaks of, are true.” I then had to return here, to this world, after receiving God’s seal as a victorious champion."

Two dozen religious leaders from different faiths, including Catholic, Orthodox and Presbyterian priests as well as Rabbis and Buddhists, are now part of a Johns Hopkins study into the effects of psychedelic drugs on religious experience.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, will give those religious leaders two powerful doses of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms. "People emerge after the [psychedelic] experience reflecting back and believing that experience to be deeply personally meaningful to them," Roland Griffiths, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at JHU School of Medicine, recently told Business Insider.

"Their instruction is to go within and collect experiences," Richards explained. "Generally people seem to be getting a deeper appreciation of their own religious heritage" after the use of the drug, he added. "In these transcendental states of consciousness, people seem to get to levels of consciousness that seem universal. So a good rabbi can encounter the Buddha within him."

After North Carolina televangelist Todd Coontz was indicted on tax fraud charges last week, claiming that his $1.5 million condo and luxury cars were "business expenses," a group that monitors ecclesiastical fraud has warned that some preachers are "raping" the Christian community.

"It's time the IRS started looking into these people that are raping the Christian community," Trinity Foundation President Ole Anthony told The Christian Post in a phone interview on Monday.

They are cheating the people of knowing the mystery of God," he said. As The Charlotte Observer reported last week, Coontz was indicted on three counts of failure to pay taxes and four counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of false tax returns. The televangelist and author of several books on the topic of seed giving that he says can make people rich, claimed as business expenses his family's $1.5 million condo, along with a fleet of luxury cars, including three BMWs, two Ferraris, a Maserati and a Land Rover.

The federal criminal bill of indictment further states that Coontz provided no proof that his Regal 2500 boat, 400 charges at movie theaters, $228,000 in clothing purchases and $140,000 in meals and other entertainment were all business expenses. Read more at

A local resident from Humboldt County, California, said that he was "sent by God" to save an 11-year-old girl on Friday who was stripped naked and almost choked and bitten to death by her mother in an exorcism.

"The mother had stripped the child naked and was shoving handfuls of sand in the child's eyes and into the child's mouth. The mother stated she was trying to remove the Demons from the child. The mother, 45 year old Kimberly Felder of Ferndale, continued the assault by viciously striking, biting, and choking the child. This assault was being witnessed by a crowd of approximately 10 to 12 people," the report said.

"The things that lady was saying did not add up for it to be an exorcism or even a belief. Plain and simple, she was trying to kill that little girl. "No holy water, no crosses, no religious relics were present, and I feel in my heart God sent me there for a reason and it might have been that. Hopefully I passed in the Lord's eyes," Marciel stated.

Christian Lesbian Rock Star Vicky Beeching Given Award by Archbishop of Canterbury

Controversial Christian rock star Vicky Beeching, who in 2014 came out as a lesbian and argued that God loves her "just the way I am," has received an award by the head of the Anglican Communion for her contributions to worship music.

"Still amazed this happened last Friday. I never thought, after coming out as gay, that I would receive an award like this. Means so much," she tweeted on Monday, and shared a link of the official document praising her for her contributions to contemporary worship music.

"If 10,000 pastors declared they were gay tomorrow, it would not change the truth of the Bible one iota. If 10,000 worship leaders declared that God had made them gay, it would not change a single scriptural truth," wrote Michael Brown, host of the nationally syndicated talk radio show The Line of Fire, in an op-ed published in The Christian Post.

Church of England to Vote on Offering 'Baptism' for Transgender People to Mark New Identity

The Church of England has reportedly decided to hold a vote on whether to begin offering baptisms for transgender individuals who have undergone a sex change and have a new identity.

Liberal voices within the Church have argued that vicars have had to carry out unofficial services to welcome and accommodate transgender Christians, and have called on the community to embrace those who identify as such. Conservatives, such as General Synod member Andrea Williams, director of Christian Concern, have strongly opposed the idea, however, stating that it goes against tradition.

"We are sensitive to people who feel uncomfortable with their sex, but Christian teaching is that God made us man and woman. The Church should help people to see the beauty of their God-given sex instead of confusing them."

The Rev. Chris Newlands, the vicar of Lancaster Priory, proposed the motion back in 2015, calling on the House of Bishops to "consider whether some nationally commended liturgical materials might be prepared to mark a person's gender transition. An evangelical pastor from Nicaragua, along with four members of the congregation, was found guilty of homicide after he threw a woman in the fire and left her to burn for five hours to cast out the "demon" controlling her.

The victim was found lying naked on a riverbank near a ravine, her body tied up and badly burned. According to local media outlet La Prensa, she was brought to a hospital but died a few days later because of severe burns and infection. Trujillo Garcia, mother of two, was believed to be demon possessed because she reportedly attacked people with a machete. The pastor and other members of the congregation took her from her home on Feb. 15, supposedly for healing prayer, and kept her locked away until Feb. 21.

Her relatives revealed during the trial that she was bound and beaten and was not given food or water. They and other people were also forbidden from visiting her. The pastor also reportedly advised them to not feel love for her because she had an evil spirit.

"He told us not to feel any love for her, because that was just the devil, that she had to be burned until only her head was left," Roberto Trujillo, the victim's cousin, told the court, according to the Telegraph.

A female pastor at a Seventh-day Adventist church in Arizona has come out as bisexual and resigned from her position, saying that she has "come to a point of complete disagreement with the Adventist Church on their teachings about LGBT people."

Johnston, who was raised in an Adventist household and describes herself as "very Adventist," explained that she is also bisexual and that she can't keep living her life without being honest about who she is and her beliefs.

"It really made it difficult for me to feel totally OK with God, that this is what [He] requires," she added. "How is this good? How is this Holy? How is this what you want for your children? The Muslim guests, members of the Clear Lake Islamic Center, were present to share an Interfaith Shabbat Service. The local dialogue initiative focused on common religious themes.

Rabbi Schloss has allowed herself to be persuaded by that deceptive phrase about “Abrahamic faiths” to assume “commonalities” among those faiths that, for Muslims, simply do not exist. In the wake of recent alleged hate crimes against Hindus in America, the community is not taking too lightly to a recently-aired episode of CNN's documentary series Believers, which focused on an alleged Hindu cannibal sect. Author and presenter Reza Aslan sparked a controversy after the channel aired the first episode of the series that showed him meeting with the Aghori sect, a mystical Hindu sect known for its extreme rituals, and eating cooked human brains.

Members of the group persuade him to bathe in the Ganges River, the waters of which are considered sacred by the Hindus. One sadhu (ascetic) then smears his forehead with human ash and offers him alcohol to drink from a human skull. The host was then forced to eat a piece of charred meat, which the Aghori informed him, was cooked human brain.

"Want to know what a dead guy's brain tastes like? Charcoal," Aslan wrote on Facebook. "It was burnt to a crisp!"

The meeting with this particular group comes to a messy end when the ascetic loses his temper at Aslan and threatens to cut off his head if he keeps talking so much. The man then begins to eat his own excrement and throws some on the CNN crew as well.

Ash Wednesday kicks off the six-week somber season called Lent that leads to Easter, and is usually marked in churches with the color purple. Traditionally, plain gray ashes, blessed by a minister or priest, are smeared on the foreheads of Christians to symbolize repentance.

“This is a way for queer Christians and queer-positive persons of faith to say ‘We are here,'” said Marian Edmonds-Allen, Parity’s executive director. “It is also a way for other people to be a witness to that and be in solidarity with them.”

I personally think this is really important because, living in India, you clearly see the challenges a society faces when there’s a lot of anti-female bigotry. Don’t get me wrong; this is present in America too, but it’s in India in a more robust and obvious way. So I think that talking about a Heavenly Mother leaves zero room for bigotry against women.

Animal sacrifices turn city streets into rivers of blood

Large-scale animal sacrifices marking the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha combined with heavy rains have turned the streets of Bangladesh’s capital into rivers of blood. Authorities in Dhaka designated several places in the city where residents could slaughter animals, but heavy downpours Tuesday meant few people could use those areas. Muslims traditionally mark Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, by slaughtering livestock. Usually a goat, sheep or a cow is killed to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s test of faith.

Dhaka residents used parking lots, garages and alleys to kill the animals and the blood flowed into the flooded streets, turning them into rivers of blood. Flooding is common in Dhaka, an overcrowded city of more than 10 million people, because of poor drainage systems.

Man seeks restraining order against God

Israeli man has petitioned the Haifa Magistrate’s Court for a restraining order against God, claiming the Almighty has been particularly unkind to him. A protocol of the hearing noted that God did not turn up for the session, although it did not specify how the court determined the Omnipresent was not in fact there, as opposed to merely exercising the right to remain silent.

He argued that over a three-year period God, had exhibited a seriously negative attitude toward him, although details of just what divine mischief he had borne the brunt of were not mentioned in the report. Presiding Judge Ahsan Canaan denied the request, which he said was ludicrous, asserting the applicant needed help not from the court but rather from other sources.

The Church of Scotland will launch a two-year investigation into the possibility of introducing online baptisms, Communion and other Christian sacraments. The church’s Legal Questions Committee, which is responsible for advising the General Assembly, the church’s lawmaking body, is pushing for “a wide-ranging review of practice and procedure which is impacted by the use of new technology in church life.”

It adds: “Now is the time to open up a wide range of discussion on these contemporary developments.”Baptism, one of the key Christian sacraments, normally demands the physical presence of the person undergoing the rite. Section 9.6 of the General Assembly’s Blue Book points out that there are no easy answers to some of the questions being asked, “but, in a world where the fastest growing communities are being fostered online, the committee believes that now is the time to open up a wide range discussion on these contemporary developments.”

The Roman Catholic Church in Poland has approved the veneration of a miraculous host, or sacramental bread used in mass, which some said began to "bleed" after it was placed in water, and was subsequently tested by various research teams to prove its authenticity.

Bishop Zbigniew Kiernikowski of Legnica said the host "has the hallmarks of a eucharistic miracle," Catholic News Service reported on Monday, revealing that the sacramental bread had been subjected to a number of tests.

"In the histopathological image, the fragments were found containing the fragmented parts of the cross striated muscle. It is most similar to the heart muscle. The research team also found tissue of "human origin" which apparently "bore signs of distress.

"Kiernikowski revealed that back in January he brought up the "bleeding host" before the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which in turn declared the host a relic of the faith, suitable for believers to come and venerate it.

Parents Charged with Fatally Beating Son in New York Church

Police say a central New York couple has been charged with beating their 19-year-old son to death inside a church, and four fellow church members have been charged with assault. The victim's 17-year-old brother is hospitalized in serious condition with injuries from an assault.

  The New Hartford Police Department says 65-year-old Bruce Leonard and 59-year-old Deborah Leonard are charged with first-degree manslaughter in the death of their son Lucas. Police say Lucas Leonard died Monday after he was beaten at Word of Life Church in New Hartford, 80 miles northwest of Albany.

The six church members were arraigned Tuesday and sent to Oneida County Jail without bail. Bruce Leonard's lawyer said it was too early to comment on details of the case. Deborah Leonard's lawyer declined to comment.
Police said more arrests are expected as the investigation continues. A possible motive wasn't disclosed.

Eva Brunne, the world's first openly lesbian bishop, has called for a church in Stockholm, Sweden, to remove all signs of the cross, and instead build an Islamic prayer room in order to welcome Muslims. Several other Christian leaders in Sweden have criticized the suggestion.

Seamen's Church Director, Kiki Wetterberg, added that it's wrong for a Christian church to remove its symbols.

"I have no problem with Muslim or Hindu sailors coming here to pray. But I believe that we are a Christian church, so we should keep the symbols. If I visit a mosque I do not ask them to take down their symbols. It's my choice to go in there," she said in the Christian newspaper Dagen.

At 103 years old, Genora Hamm Biggs has seen a lot. The centenarian was alive when women first got the right to vote. She’s lived through two World Wars and the Civil Rights Movement.

Biggs claims leaders at Union Grove Baptist Church in Elberton, Georgia sent her a letter in August that banned her from attending the church after she disagreed with the pastor's style of worship. The retired school teacher has been an active part of her spiritual community for 92 years, so the public rejection was upsetting for her.

“I joined when I was just 11 years old,” Biggs, who served as church secretary for 40 years, told The Huffington Post on the phone. “I was shocked when I got that letter.”

The Letter:

“This letter is to inform you that according to the by-laws of the Union Grove Baptist Church, and by vote of the active members, any membership or associations that you have had with this church are now officially revoked. Therefore, you cannot attend Union Grove Baptist Church for any reason whatsoever. You are not to come to the property of the Union Grove Baptist Church located at 680 Pulliam Street, Elberton, Georgia 30635.”

Episcopalians voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to allow religious weddings for same-sex couples, solidifying the church's embrace of gay rights that began more than a decade ago with the pioneering election of the first openly gay bishop. The Rev. Bonnie Perry of Chicago, a lesbian married to a fellow Episcopal priest, hugged fellow supporters on Wednesday and said, "We're all included now."

"For the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in our congregations now know under the eyes of God and in every single state in this blessed country, they are welcome to receive all the sacraments," she said.
